March 2, 2023
Dear HLG Client,
We are writing with important updates about tax filing and payment deadlines for the 2022 and 2023 tax years.
We ask that you read this email in its entirety.
Due to the January 2023 storms, many counties within the state of California have been designated by FEMA as disaster areas. Last Thursday, February 23. 2023, the IRS announced that it would provide automatic extensions of time for taxpayers who live or have businesses in these counties to file and pay their 2022 income tax returns.
The Federal tax deadline for these taxpayers is now October 16, 2023.
Today, the State of California announced that it will conform to the IRS extensions.
This means that there is no March 15 and/or April 15 tax deadline this year for California taxpayers who reside in designated counties. The counties who do NOT qualify for these automatic extensions are: Imperial, Kern, Lassen, Modoc, Plumas, Shasta, and Sierra. All other California counties qualify.
This automatic relief also applies to estimated tax payments for 2023. Payments that are usually due between January 17, 2023 and September 15, 2023 are now due October 16, 2023. A summary of the deadline changes is as follows:

Please note:
If you had an original filing deadline of 3/15/2023 and would like to file by that deadline, we are following our original submission deadlines. We therefore need to have received all documents by 2/15/2023 in order to file by 3/15/2023.
If you want to file your individual tax return by 4/18/2023, we need to receive all of your documents by 3/15/2023.
Generally speaking, due to the volume of tax returns that we process, we require a minimum of 4 weeks to prepare a tax return; therefore, if you would like your tax return filed by a specific timeframe, please plan to submit your information 4 weeks prior to that date.
We can prepare your tax return and file it prior to October 16, 2023, but you can wait until 10/16/2023 to pay your income tax bill.
The 10/16/2023 deadline also applies to IRA and HSA contributions. If you would like to make a 2022 contribution to either an IRA or an HSA account, please consult with your tax advisor to determine whether or not you are eligible to do so. If you are, you have until 10/16/2023 to make the contribution.
Given the new filing deadline of 10/16/2023 for ALL tax returns and related tax payments, we are anticipating a busier than usual Fall filing season. We are therefore changing our submission deadline for the Fall deadline. In order to file your tax return on or before 10/16/2023, we need to receive all tax documents no later than 8/15/2023.
These tax extensions are taxpayer friendly, and we look forward to working with you to maximize any potential benefits for you. As there is additional time to file and pay taxes this year, we do not anticipate that our team will be working nights and weekends as they often do this time of year. Instead, we will work with you throughout the year to meet your tax filing and payment obligations.
If you have any questions about these extended deadlines, please contact your Tax Advisor directly.
